How Class A Surface in Automotive Industry evolve?

In automotive design Class A surface is any surface that is visible to customer (Ex: Exterior door panel, Bumper, Skin panel, Door trim, IP, Headliner, etc.)

\n

Class A Surfaces will be normally drawn using tools like Alias, ICEM by surface/studio design engineer and sent to CAD engineer in IGES, STEP or other CAT format where CAD engineer will be able check for manufacturing feasibility of surface in CATIA which involves draft analysis using a best tooling direction, Surface continuity & Tangency of surface. All this check will be carried in Generative Shape Design Module within CATIA.

\n
\n \n
\n

Draft analysis is very important as it improves the moldability of any part. Surface without draft will run into risk of break, poor cosmetic finishes, or wrap due to moulding stresses caused by plastic cooling. Minimum draft required for demoulding without any stress would be 0.5 – 1 degree for vertical faces, 3 degrees for smooth texture and 5 or more degrees for heavy textures. In general draft angle should be increased about 1deg for every 5 microns of texture depth.

\n

Once the class A surface is checked for all feasibility. CAD engineer will offset the surface in CATIA for required thickness of component and backside of Class A surface referred as B side features like locators, Clips, Heat Staking bosses & reinforcement ribs will be implemented to fix the part in desired position, to meet perceived quality & achieve desired NVH targets.
